John 18:37-40
“You are a king then?” Pilate asked.
“You say that I’m a king,” Jesus replied. “I was born for this, and I have come into the world for this: to testify to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth listens to My voice.”
“What is truth?” said Pilate.
After he had said this, he went out to the Jews again and told them, “I find no grounds for charging Him. You have a custom that I release one prisoner to you at the Passover. So, do you want me to release to you the King of the Jews?”
They shouted back, “No, not him! Give us Barabbas!”
Being a pilot for a major airline is an important job. There was a Captain who liked to tinker on cars. He flew log trips to Europe and also bought and ran a small gas station near his home. He enjoyed changing spark plugs and chatting with folks while pumping gas.
One Saturday morning dressed in his greasy overalls, he walked down to the local hardware store to buy a wrench.
“What’s new?” the store owner asked as he rang up the purchase.
“I’m thinking of taking the Cairo run this month,” the Captain said. “I enjoy flying to London but I think the change of pace will do me good.” He paid for the wrench and left.
Another customer, curiously, asked, “Who’s the world traveler?”
Rolling his eyes, the store owner nodded toward the departing Pilot. “Some nut who runs the gas station down the road. He thinks he’s an airline pilot.” Both men shared a laugh.
It can be an easy thing to judge a book by its cover. Jesus was missed by many because He didn’t look like a King. He was mocked, beaten and laughed at by the religious leaders of HIs day even though He correctly told them, He is Lord.
John 8:58 “Very truly I tell you,” Jesus answered, “before Abraham was born, I am!”
Today, many still mock Him.
Will you laugh at Jesus, or love Him?
